Shims for Construction and structural

Why structures use shims

A steel column or machine base is set on its foundation, levelled on packing shims under the base plate, then grouted or bolted down. Slotted shims slide around an anchor bolt; plates with a hole drop over it. In many designs the shims stay under the plate after the grout hardens and carry load while it cures, so they must be flat, clean and the right material. Your structural engineer sets the shim thickness, the number of shims and the material.

What we make

  • Base-plate packing shims, 100 × 100 mm with a 26 mm slot, mild steel 2 to 6 mm; sizes from 75 to 200 mm
  • Spacer plates with a centre hole, 50 × 50 mm, Ø13 hole, 2 to 6 mm, zinc plated
  • Machine-foot shim plates, 150 × 100 mm with two Ø18 holes, 1 to 3 mm, zinc plated
  • Stainless and galvanised packing for coastal and wet sites

Finish and corrosion

Mild-steel shims are supplied plain and lightly oiled, with primer on request. Zinc plating adds 5 to 25 micrometres on each face, so measure after plating when the gauge matters. Stainless steel is the choice for corrosive or wet sites.

Typical uses

Where construction and structural customers use shims.

  • Steel column base plates
  • Machine bases and skids
  • Precast and structural joints
  • Equipment foundations
  • Cable tray and ladder supports

Ground-Mount Base Plates and Anchor-Bolt Cages

The base plate for a post or pole foundation: 6 mm shown (plates of 10-16 mm are plasma-cut outside). The anchor-bolt cage is welded to a template ring so the bolt pattern stays within ±1 mm when concreted.

FAQ

Shims for construction and structural: questions

Can shims stay under the base plate after grouting?

In many structural designs they can, and they carry load while the grout cures. Follow your engineer's specification for the number, thickness and material of the shims.

What is the difference between slotted and holed shims?

A slotted (horseshoe) shim slides in around an anchor bolt without removing the nut. A shim with a hole drops over the bolt. Both keep the stack in place.

Which size should I choose?

Choose a size at least as large as the bearing area it supports. Our standard packing shim is 100 × 100 mm with a 26 mm slot; other sizes and slots are made to order.

Do you galvanise shims?

Shims can be supplied zinc plated or in galvanised sheet. Tell us the coating and thickness; allow for the coating in the gauge.
