Shims for aerospace

Aerospace shims and spacers, made to your drawing

Shims close gaps between mating parts so assemblies fit without forcing and loads are shared correctly. We make shims, spacers and packing plates to your drawing for aerospace tooling, jigs, ground-support equipment, test rigs and prototype assemblies.

Shims for Aerospace

Why aerospace uses shims

Aircraft structures are built from parts that must mate within tight tolerances. Where a gap between two parts is larger than the allowance, a shim fills it so the joint is stable and the loads are carried as designed. Laminated peelable shims are a common way to do this: the fitter peels off thin layers one at a time until the gap is exactly right.

Liquid (resin) shims suit irregular gaps. Metal shims suit flat, repeatable gaps and joints that are taken apart for maintenance.

What we make

  • U-shims and shim plates in stainless steel 304 and 316, brass and mild steel, 0.05 to 6 mm, to your outline and hole pattern
  • Laminated peelable shims, ten layers of 0.05 mm stainless steel (0.5 mm in all), for tooling and fixture adjustment
  • Tapered wedge pairs for smooth height setting
  • Shim sheet in sets of gauges, and custom outlines cut to drawing

Other alloys on request: tell us the material and specification.

How we work with aerospace programmes

We make to your drawing and your approved material. Quality approvals and flight-part qualification are set by each programme (for example AS9100 supplier approval, or approval by the airworthiness authority). Tell us what your programme requires and we tell you plainly whether we can meet it. We do not claim approvals we do not hold.

Typical uses

Where aerospace customers use shims.

  • Assembly jigs and fixtures
  • Tooling and gauge shims
  • Ground-support equipment
  • Test rigs and avionics test benches
  • Prototype and mock-up structure
  • Maintenance equipment

MRO Tool-Control Cabinet with Shadow-Board Door and Drawers

A floor cabinet on castors: a full-height lockable door whose inner face carries a shadow board, three foam-lined drawers behind it and a top work surface. Foam or painted outlines show at a glance if a tool is missing, which is what hangars need for foreign-object-damage control.

Avionics Test-Bench Chassis (Ground Equipment)

A ground-equipment chassis, 480 × 350 × 180 mm, for an avionics test bench: ESD-safe powder coat, connector cut-outs to your drawing and a ground stud. Ground equipment only, not flight hardware.

FAQ

Shims for aerospace: questions

Do you make flight-critical shims?

We make shims to your drawing. Flight-critical parts need your programme's approvals and process controls. Tell us what is required, and we say plainly whether we can meet it.

What materials can you supply?

Stainless steel 304 and 316, brass, mild steel and galvanised steel as standard. Other alloys can be quoted when you give the material and specification.

Can you make peelable laminated shims?

Yes. Our laminated shim is ten bonded layers of 0.05 mm stainless steel (0.5 mm in all), cut to a U-shape or to your outline.

How thin can a shim be?

0.05 mm foil. Gauges below 0.8 mm are laser-cut or photo-etched; thicker gauges are cut on our own shear and turret punch.

Do you provide material certificates?

A material certificate for the shim stock is available on request. Other documents are agreed with you for each order.
