Shims and precision packing

Laminated peelable shims

A laminated shim is a stack of thin bonded layers. The fitter peels off one layer at a time to reach the exact gap, so one shim replaces a box of gauges. It suits tooling, press dies, fixtures and assemblies that need fine adjustment.

How laminated shims work

Our standard laminated shim is a 75 × 75 mm U-shape with a 21 mm slot, made of ten bonded layers of 0.05 mm stainless steel (0.5 mm in all), cut to size from laminated shim stock. Peel layers one at a time until the gap is right. Other outlines, slots and layer counts are cut to your drawing.

  • Ten layers of 0.05 mm (0.5 mm in all); three sizes
  • Stainless steel 304 laminate; other materials to your specification
  • Laser-cut to a U-shape or your outline

FAQ

Laminated peelable: questions

Where are peelable shims used?

In aerospace assembly, tooling, press dies, fixtures and machine alignment, wherever the gap has to be set by trial and adjusted later.

Are they strong enough to stay in place?

Peelable shims are held together by bonded layers; for permanent, heavily loaded joints use solid shims. Your engineer decides which is suitable.
